Custom essays on Robots in our society
Demonstrating the ways people think about robots, it becomes obvious that for the most people the word ‘robot’ is associated with an android, that is, with something like a man. But in most cases such an idea is false, being a result of watching various films and reading fiction books. A typical industrial robot consists of the following parts:
1) Controller – a chip that coordinates all the robot’s actions.
2) The robotic arm. The main objective of the robotic arm is to move a so-called. END-effector. Robotic arms are distinguished by the number of degrees of freedom: the better robot has the more degrees. Most industrial robots have arms with 6 degrees of freedom.
3) Drive- engine that provides the mobility of the hand. It is controlled by controller.
4) END-effector, which is the attachment to a robotic arm. Such attachment may be quite different from the primitive to the terminal control unit.
5) A sensor, which provides the robot’s ‘senses’ because exactly a sensor helps the robot to recognize and identify the object, and to continue a work with the object in a proper way.
As soon as the first examples of more or less advanced robots have appeared, the man wanted to check them in many dangerous places. For example, people would never have looked into the crater of an active volcano without the robot Dante II (see picture 3), while the robot Sojourner expanded our knowledge of Mars. In 1997, this aggregate landed on the surface of the planet and gave a lot of pictures to Earth. Saying about home robots, we see that they are not adapted to extreme conditions, and they can not perform complex work. Their mission is to help people at home and entertain them. There are plenty of inexpensive household robots: robots-vacuums, robots-lawnmowers and many others. Moreover, robots can cope without any problems with the first task, which is to help in the home, while the second task (to entertain) requires more complicated skills and programs. In such a way, a very small number of robots are able to entertain people. For example, the robot PaPeRo created by the company NEC, in addition to purely domestic functions, is able to speak. This robot knows 300 phrases, and recognizes much more phrases.
According to many scientists, the future of robots is brightly presented in the development of nanorobots. Of course, nowadays this area of human knowledge is not old enough, and it does not even achieve the level of conventional robotics, but it is rapidly growing and has a big variety of perspectives. Speaking about the place of nanorobots in our society, we should describe them as small cybernetic mechanisms which can work safely with the atoms (stitch them together, in other words, to implement mechanosynthesis into practice), to move on very different surfaces, or to replicate (to reproduce themselves). Thus, the microcosm would be able to create any structure in the macrocosm. In other words, nanorobots will be able to ‘build’ our houses, technical equipment and other things from atoms. In addition, nanorobots, being a highly developed structures, will be also able to take care of human health, to treat human organism (to destroy viruses and cancer cells, to monitor the heart’s activity, etc.), and to signal about some dangerous situations that could be a result of serious injury. Everything observed in this paragraph could be interpreted as a kind of fiction several decades ago, but exactly today contemporary society continues various experiments with the development of different nanorobots, and people even wait for them because these mechanisms can help to overcome many difficulties in human life.
Analyzing the activity of robots from various perspectives, it is easy to mention that robotics indefinitely pushed the limits of productivity growth. For instance, robots can give the same result to the producer spending in several times less power, energy and time, while the use of robots in various spheres of human life can increase the level of unemployment among people, who are not as universal in their functions as robots, and who need salary and rest. There is no doubt that robots make a human work easier, they have enriched it and made it more concise or more efficient, but they still need a specific kind of control from human side because only people can make the right decisions and solve ethical dilemmas.
Different thoughts about the robots, give people an understanding that undoubtedly, human dependence on robots will increase. It will give people many advantages, but it also will cause significant social changes. The ubiquity of robotic workers can make our lives a fairy tale, which we wait since the industrial revolution. In this case, the increasing versatility and intelligence of artificial organisms will lead to the fact that robots will learn to make any hard work that so far is made only by the person. This means that civilization is waiting for something like an industrial revolution in both the social and economic terms. Wealth will be concentrated in the hands of the owners of large enterprises that can benefit from working machines. To sum up, due to the mass work of robots there will appear a lot of cheap products, and will be introduced into practice many advanced medical technologies. All this will lead to improved quality of life, but many people are at risk of losing their job. Such changes will not be able to pass smoothly and quietly. Inevitably there are those who will demand a reduction in the role of robots in our lives. It is easy to imagine, as in the case of various protests, the government will use special robots against people to disperse demonstrations. Thus, taking everything the above said into consideration, it is possible to mention that it seems that many people are right in their forecasts that robots are both good and evil for human society.
In conclusion, we have observed the place of robots in our society, and discussed possible outcomes of their constant use in practice. It is necessary to say that robots are obedient, strong and tirelessly working machines, which can improve the conditions of our existence only in the way of their proper use because the first robot’s mission is not to make harm to a human. We have proved (using various examples) that a well-designed robot can be taught to perform the desired operations and to perform all of them without any rest during the whole week, month, year, etc. But, in spite of its active development, robotization of life is at the very beginning of its extensive growth and spread, and has to face many challenges in the nearest future. The robots have not learned how to quickly and accurately recognize the objects yet. In addition to technological and economic obstacles, we have not seen the influence of robotics on the environment yet, and we cannot forecast the development of ethical relationship between people and robots. Thus, we should realize that the development of robotics is a kind of invariable part of our future, and the robots, in any of their manifestations, will play an important role in our society. Moreover, the main purpose of contemporary science is not only to develop perfect robots, but also to be responsible for the own actions because the responsibility for mistakes is always a part of human activity, while robots are only tools created to meet objectives of humanity.
