The Impact of Facebook on UTM Students’ Everyday Life essay part 1

Discussion/Analysis

The findings of the study show the considerable impact of Facebook on the everyday life of participants of the study. The major influence refers to their communication style and scope. They have expanded their online communication. They have not only started new social relations online but also they have started using Facebook for the communication with their friends and family members. Consequently, Facebook has become the effective social media used by participants for communication with new friends, old ones and family members. This is why it is possible to conclude that Facebook performs the communicative role above all.

Participants underuse the educational potential of Facebook because they do not use it regularly for their learning but they admit such potential and some participants do use Facebook for learning from time to time. Consequently, Facebook has educational potential but this potential is not fully used at the moment. On the other hand, they have the experience of using Facebook for learning purposes that means that Facebook has a considerable potential as the social media that can be used for educational purposes.

The creation of virtual community by participants means that they develop new social experience which involves the creation of online communities, which members they may not even know in the real world. Virtual communities can have a considerable impact on the everyday life of UTM students because they spend a lot of time online in Facebook. They access Facebook daily and spend at least one hour online. The large amount of time, which they spend online and virtual communities affect their social relations. The experience of using social media to maintain new social relations lead to the appearance of new type of social relations which are virtual and different from real world social relations.

In addition, UTM students participating in the study use Facebook as the means of communication with their parents and other meaningful people. Such a change in social relations and communication with family members and friends affects the everyday life of UTM students because they refuse from communication via phones in favor of the communication via Facebook. On the other hand, Facebook allows sharing video and audio files and are more convenient for students to use as the means of communication compared to conventional communication means. Facebook opens new opportunities for communication of UTM students and they use these opportunities.

The rise of the time UTM students online using Facebook implies that they spend less time on their social relations in the real world. Even though they do not recognize that Facebook has influenced their real world social relations, Facebook is likely to have influenced social relations of people in the real world because they cannot pay as much attention to real world communication, if they have increased the time they spend on virtual, online communication. Such a change may interfere in the social experience of UTM students because they may fail to enhance their socialization and development of close social relations in the real world under the impact of Facebook.
